Electrical and Computer Engineering

Electrical engineers design, develop, test, and supervise the manufacture of electrical equipment, such as electric motors, radar and navigation systems, communication systems, or power generation equipment.

Electrical engineers have many duties, here are some of those duties:

  • Design new ways to use electrical power to develop or improve products.
  • Direct the manufacture, installation, and testing of electrical equipment to ensure that products meet specifications and codes.
  • Work with project managers on production efforts to make sure that projects are finished satisfactorily, on time, and within budget.

Computer engineers research, design, develop, and test computer systems and components.

Some of the duties that computer engineers do are:

  • Design new computer hardware
  • Test the new computer hardware they design
  • Update the existing computer equipment so that it will work with new software as it is developed.

Both careers require a bachelor’s degree in the field chosen. North Dakota has two great universities that offer both electrical engineering and computer engineering programs. It is important to make sure that the programs be accredited by the organization called ABET https://www.abet.org/. The University of North Dakota and The University of North Dakota offer these programs and they are both accredited by ABET.
